American Buff Geese
We've raised this breed for over 10 years. Both Am. Buff geese and ganders are a soft apricot fawn color, having buff colored feathers on the back and sides that are edged with creamy white color. The abdomen of these birds is nearly white. Their feet and bill are of orange to reddish orange in color, with a pink tip/nail. Their legs sometimes fade to a pink color during breeding season, or when green grass is not available. Their neck is medium sized with deeply furrowed feathers. The keel is light, and they have a slightly arched back. There are two rounded fatty lobes at the abdomen. Ganders typically weigh around 18 pounds, with geese weighing around 16.
Am. Buff Geese are excellent for the small homestead. They are very gentle and curious, and are good foragers/weeders. Our geese will typically lay 10-15 large white eggs each spring. They are excellent parents, with the hen being very broody, and both the male and female are very protective of and involved with rearing the goslings.
American Buff Geese are listed as Watch Status by The Livestock Conservancy and are on Slow Food's Ark of Taste as meat birds that produce a rich, dark meat for the table. Our geese originated from Holderread's Waterfowl.
